For the past year, I have been working on going all-natural. That means organic food, along with all-natural makeup and body/hair/cleaning products. You could say I’ve gone green. This got me thinking about home decor. Why should our carpet/rugs be any different?
In my opinion, the three most important aspects of natural flooring are:
- 100% natural and biodegradable.
- Made from replenishable resources.
- Non-toxic and antibacterial.
What is natural flooring?
Natural flooring are rugs and carpet made from the natural fiber of vegetables. They also include animal fibers, such as wool.
What are the advantages of natural fibers?
They are certainly the most durable and can be used as area rugs, wall-to-wall carpeting, and stair runners. These natural fibers are non-toxic so they do not give off poisonous gasses that can be irritating.
What is sisal?
Sisal fibers are sustainably harvested by hand from the leaves of a specific cactus plant. Sisal differs, for it is stronger and even more durable than the others. It is actually used for rope and twine.
What is sisal wool?
Where do I begin with sisal wool? It’s the best of both worlds! Sisal wool has the look, texture, and durability of sisal yet has the same soft feel of wool on your feet.
What is seagrass?
This non-porous fiber is a tropical grass, which is smooth to the touch and has a natural shine to it. Seagrass is only available in its natural color which starts off green then lessens overtime. This is the most water and stain resistant fiber of the bunch.
What is mountain grass or hemp?
Mountain Grass is also known as Hemp. This grass fiber is smooth, renewable, and pesticide free.
What is jute?
Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is the most affordable and comes in second place to cotton in the amount produced. The stalks of the plant are harvested, bundled, and soaked in water for a certain number of days to soften up so the fibers can be separated and dried out. Jute has a very similar feel to cotton.
What about wool?
Wool is durable, resilient, and most importantly a renewable resource. Wool fibers are natural which makes them long lasting, flame retardant, and resistant to dirt and crushing. For these reasons and many more, wool carpet is the easiest to clean and maintain.
