Designed and styled by Kirby Goff Interior Design, this Providence home pairs neutral B-Line in Khaki with hand-placed nailheads across connected stairs and hallways.
A few carefully chosen accessories can give a neutral carpet a style of its own. Our October Project of the Month brings that idea home with custom stair runners with nailheads in Providence, Rhode Island. Designed and styled by Kirby Goff Interior Design, the project pairs beige carpet with decorative detailing that complements the home’s stunning wallpaper.
Installed by Ken, the layout includes two stair runners extending up to the third level and two hallway runners. Everything connects for a unified look, with the nailhead treatment adapted to suit the stairs and hallways.

B-Line in Khaki Sets the Foundation

The wallpaper helped guide the carpet selection. With such a striking feature already in place, the runner needed to work alongside it and contribute its own detail. B-Line in Khaki, one of our new roll specials, offered the neutral beige color that brought the design together.
The understated shade gives the wallpaper room to stand out while establishing a consistent foundation throughout the connected spaces. Using the same carpet on both staircases and in the hallways helps the eye follow the layout through the home, rather than treating each section as a separate design decision.
That consistency also creates room to personalize the finishing details. Here, stair runners with nailheads add a decorative accent to the neutral carpet, giving it a tailored look that complements Kirby Goff Interior Design’s styling.
Stair Runners with Nailheads: Placed Individually by Hand

Nailheads are an accessory worth looking at closely. Along the stair runners, their repeated placement defines the edges and gives the carpet another layer of detail. The beige color keeps the overall look understated, while the nailheads give the stairs a distinctive finish.
Every nailhead is placed individually by hand. Creating the finished line requires attention to each piece, including its spacing and alignment with the next. Across two stair runners, that work is repeated step by step, carrying the detail upward through the home.
However, the appeal of stair runners with nailheads comes from that combination of material and handwork. The carpet establishes the color and texture, and the individual accents shape how the finished edges look. In this project, both were considered alongside the wallpaper so that the runner feels connected to the surrounding design.
A Small Detail Connects the Hallways
The homeowner preferred a simpler nailhead treatment in the hallways. Instead of repeating the rows used on the stairs, we added one nailhead at each mitered corner of the hallway runners.

At a mitered corner, the edging meets at an angle to form the corner. A single nailhead at that meeting point gives the hallway finish a subtle connection to the stairs. It repeats a recognizable element of the design while keeping the long hallway edges free of additional detailing.
It’s worth mentioning though, this is where customization makes a difference. Stair runners with nailheads can be coordinated with hallway runners that use the same accessory more sparingly. The shared carpet keeps the spaces visually connected, and the corner accents carry the detail into the halls in a way that suits the homeowner’s preference.
Two Staircases, Two Hallways, One Shared Look
A project spanning several levels needs to work as a complete design. Ken installed the two stair runners and two hallway runners, bringing the connected layout up to the third level. B-Line in Khaki provides the common thread, with the nailhead detailing tying the different finishes together.
The finished project also shows how a roll special can become something personal. The material is the starting point; the custom sizing, edging, and accessories shape the final result. Here, a neutral carpet becomes part of a distinctive interior through its relationship with the wallpaper and the hand-placed details.
