Q+A With Jill

How did you get into interior design?

“I have always been interested in it since I was young! My mom was a DIY-er always moving furniture around and wallpapering the house in the 80s! This got me creative with decorating my own dollhouse with wallpaper, painting each room, and getting new furniture for each birthday—it was such a treat.”

How long have you been doing this for? Feel free to mention any memorable moments through your years as a designer.

“I started as a project manager for a busy firm out of Cambridge eight years ago. This is where I learned all the aspects of the business. I was very hands-on at every stage of the design and saw each project through to the end, working with and coordinating all the trades.

“I started my own business in 2020, right before the pandemic hit. My first thought was, ‘What bad timing,’ but it ended up being the best timing! Everyone was locked in their homes with money to burn, and business really took off. That year, while businesses were closed, I did two hair salons, which really helped get my name out there.”

Copper & Ivory – What’s the inspiration behind the name?

“Choosing a name was hard! Copper was a play on my last name, and I liked the idea of using design elements in the name.”

How would you describe your home style?

“I love to travel, and when we do, we stay at Airbnbs. I love the feeling of these vacation homes that are so effortless and minimalist yet cozy at the same time.

“I just moved into a new home, and I’m really trying to design it like a vacation home without losing the feeling that I’m in New England. For example, I just got an amazing plaster white chandelier from Jamie Young, paired with caned dining chairs and lots of warm neutrals throughout. It’s giving me that relaxed vibe already.

“We also have three kids, a dog, and a kitten, so performance fabrics and durable materials are key!”

What’s your favorite design trend of 2024?

“I love that gray is officially out. I never got into the gray trend, but I’m so happy to see browns and earthy tones again.

“I’m also a big fan of color-drenching. I hope that stays for a while. There’s something so cozy about the walls, trim, and ceiling painted the same color. I just did it in an entryway with the color Parma Gray by Farrow and Ball, and it’s just so pretty and calming when you walk in the door.”

What do you expect of design trends in 2025?

“I think people are really going to lean into sustainable design and focus on wellness in their home. Choosing more natural materials and creating calming spaces is really important to relax in and feel safe at the end of each day.”
