Happy Earth Day!
Have you ever wondered what The Carpet Workroom does to boast itself as “the most Earth friendly carpet store in America”?
Earth Day is an annual event created to celebrate our planet’s environment and raise public awareness about pollution. The day, marked on April 22, is observed worldwide with rallies, conferences, outdoor activities, and service projects. Earth Day is a time of the year to reflect on how your life impacts the planet. On this day, people think about new ways to reduce their carbon imprint and improve water quality. They get together to get their hands dirty and make earnest strides towards making the Earth a better, and healthier, place to live. Earth Day is an important day for people to take time out of their busy lives to consider the impact that humanity has on the environment and for taking steps to minimize these impacts. As a result, we all can live happier and healthier lives in tune with nature. While it would be nice if we all lived as if every day was Earth Day, this holiday serves as a friendly reminder each year, to respect the Earth and to show a little gratitude to Mother Nature.
So, what does Earth Day mean to The Carpet Workroom? It means that Despite our industry’s overall unwillingness to commit to a sustainable future, The Carpet Workroom is taking all measures to ensure that we are leading the way in green carpet and other sustainable flooring supplies. At one time, we worked hand in hand with local municipalities to create a carpet recycling process in Massachusetts but that has since fizzled out. We now focus our efforts on offering mostly green carpet and other Earth friendly materials in all of our showrooms.

Our carpet remnant inventory shows our commitment from landfill diversion
One way that we reduce waste is by saving carpet remnants and allowing clients to purchase these materials for smaller projects like rugs and runners. Instead of throwing these stunning carpet scraps outs, we find them a home in another project. Our smaller carpet remnants can be found at our Needham location and our larger remnant inventory is housed in our Stoughton location.
Green Guard
Aside from taking your shoes off and using safe home remedies for spot cleaning, there is one other preventative measure you can take to ensure a clean carpet. We call it Green Guard. With every new carpet or rug purchase, we offer a natural stain protector that is 100% natural and safe for human contact. Along with its ability to repel stains and dirt, this fiber guard is skin-friendly, reduces allergens, and contains no fragrances or dyes. It is approved safe for children and even pets. The Green Guard is applied onto the carpet after the runner or area rug has been fabricated. The protectant is clear and does not have any odor, but is highly recommended for all types of carpet projects. When it comes to light-colored carpet or high traffic areas, we highly recommend it!
Campaign for Wool
The Campaign for Wool is a global community for sheep farmers, retailers, designers, manufacturers and consumers united by the Royal Highness The Prince of Whales. It aims to educate as many people as possible about the incredible benefits and versatility of wool in fashion, furnishings, and everyday life. This in turn, supports many businesses and local farmers whose livelihoods depend on the wool industry. For more information, click on this link.
Here is some additional information about why you should choose wool or other natural fibers for all your soft flooring projects.
Natural
Wool is a protein fiber formed in the skin of sheep, and thus one hundred percent natural, not man-made.
Renewable
As long as there is grass to graze on, everywhere sheep will produce a new fleece; making wool a renewable fiber source. Woolgrowers actively work on safeguard the environment and improve efficiency, endeavoring to make the wool industry sustainable for future generations.
Biodegradable
At the end of its useful life, wool can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, releasing valuable nutrients into the ground. When a natural valuable nutrients into the ground. When a natural wool fiber is disposed of in soil, it takes a very short time to break down, whereas most synthetics are extremely slow to degrade.
Breathable
Wool fibers are crimped, and when tightly packed together form millions of tiny pockets of air. This unique structure allows it to absorb and release moisture – either in the atmosphere or perspiration from the wearer – without compromising its thermal efficiency.
Easy Care
The protective waxy coating on wool fiber makes wool products resistant to staining and they also pick up less as well is naturally anti-static!
Odor Resistant
Wool is far more efficient than other textiles at absorbing sweat and releasing it into the air before bacteria has a chance to develop and produce unpleasant body odor.
A SAFE SOLUTION
Wool is naturally safe. It is not known to cause allergies and does not promote the growth of bacteria. It can even reduce floating dust in the atmosphere, as the fiber’s microscopic scales are able to trap and hold dust in the top layers until vacuumed away. Thanks to its high water and nitrogen content, wool is naturally flame-retardant, and has a far higher ignition threshold than many other fibers, will not melt and stick to the skin causing burns, and produces less noxious fumes that cause death in fire situations. Finally, wool also has a naturally high level of UV protection, which is much higher than most synthetics and cotton.
In our humble opinion, wool carpet is the most green carpet you can choose for your home!
