A carpet or rug will set the tone for an entire room because it is the cornerstone of any design scheme. Once you decide on the carpeting or rug, the wall color, window treatment, fabrics, and furnishings will all fall into place. Now that you realize it is a smart idea to decorate a room around a carpet, you must decide on a pattern and color. What’s on the floor, whether it’s a solid color or a bold pattern, will create the mood for an entire space. It adds detail to a room…no matter what. It can geometric, floral, or a simple check. These things also brings character and complexity to the overall design. Designing with pattern requires some thought. It would be difficult to make a space work when the carpet, walls, and fabric in a room all have different unique designs competing with one another. It’s much better when patterns work with each other. If there’s a primary fabric that you’ve had your eye on that has a big bold print, then consider a simple pattern, such as a check or diamond for the carpeting. Scale must not be forgotten in the process. For example, if a carpet has a large-scale pattern, then other patterns in the room should be smaller or if the carpeting has a floral design, it’s a good idea to say away from contrasting floral patterns.
